A guy
named Clifford Henry Jennings was born in Salt Lake City in
1892 and died there in 1959. Jennings was arrested several
times in Salt Lake on bookmaking and liquor charges.
I’m not certain what he was doing in 1928 when the chips
were ordered but a year later in March of 1929 he was denied
a license to operate a “card club” by the police chief
because the address where he wished to operate was a known
bookmaking location.
The address, 373 South
Main, was busted for bookmaking as early as 1927 but I’m not
sure if Jennings was operating it then or not. By 1930 the
place was being referred to as the New Grand Smoke Shop and by the mid 30’s as Cliff’s
Place (named for Jennings). The address was raided for
gambling numerous times and Jennings was arrested there
1932, 1933, 1935 and 1937.
Jennings was also involved in the auto parts and service
business from the 1910’s-30’s. He was involved in the
promotion of auto racing in SLC. Ad to the right
is from 1920. |
