The J.S. on the chips refers to Joel Spitz.  Joel Spitz and Maxine Hart were married in July 1924.  Joel was a director of clothier Hart, Schaffner and Marx.  Joel's wife, Maxine, was the daughter of founder Max Hart.

The tree alluded to on the chip is called a trail tree, a tree whose trunk was deliberately bent to an almost 90 degree angle when a sapling by Native Americans to mark trails.  The Spitz' residence in Glencoe, IL was named Trail Tree after the trail tree located on the property.  The mansion was a wedding present from Maxine's father in 1924
