The hyphen between the WB on the
Warner Bros. shield was in use during the introduction of a Warner
Bros. motion picture during the years 1935-1937.
Based upon the fact that serifs
were used on the WB poker chips, we have pegged the chip delivery to
early 1937. Note examples of the WB shield:
April 1936 (no serif)
March 1937 (serifs)
October 1937 (no serif)
Jack Warner's Beverly Hills mansion
was under construction in the summer of 1936. It was reported
"not finished" in late December 1936. Warner was reported in
his home by October 1937. Jack moved into his new home
sometime between Jan-Oct 1937
From the 1937 Beverly Hills directory:
According to Neal Gabor in his 1989
book: An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews invented Hollywood:
It is said that Warner loaned Bette
Davis who, at the time, was under contract with Warner Bros., to MGM in
order to settle a large poker debt he owed to Sam Goldwyn.
To the right is a letter from 1929 in
which Warner wrote to Hunt Stromberg of MGM about a poker debt from a
game at the Roosevelt Hotel
Below is a pic of Jack Warner and his
wife (on the right), supposedly from a party at his house in 1937.
