Nid de Papillon, or “butterfly
nest,” was the name of an estate
constructed around 1917-18 in East
Hampton, New York for recently
divorced Robert Wilmarth Appleton and his wife
Katherine Semple Jordan, recently
widowed. The Appletons also had a residence
at 375 Park Avenue in New York City.
The Appletons were wealthy
socialites who liked traveling and
entertaining at Nid de Papillon.
